Five Ways to Help Keep Arthritis at Bay

Whether it's acute or chronic arthritis, one thing is for certain, all arthritis sufferers experience pain. If you have arthritis and want to try to keep arthritis at bay, here are some ways to live well with arthritis.

  1. This may sound surprising, but according to a study in the British Medical Journal, women who drink more than three alcoholic drinks per week (beer, wine, or liquor) over a 10-year period reduced their risk of rheumatoid arthritis by about half. Research suggests that alcohol dampens the body's immune response.
  2. According to the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism, eating cherries can reduce gout attack risk. Cherries are high in anthocyanins - pain-fighting antioxidants.
  3. Exercising, such as walking, yoga, weight training and more, will help you maintain flexibility and will help you maintain a healthy weight, which might prevent some types of arthritis.
  4. If you like curry, you may want to incorporate more of it into your diet. Curry contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties that might help arthritis pain.
  5. Protect your joints when engaging in everyday activities, such as housecleaning. Here are some housecleaning "moving" examples that might help protect your joints: bend with your knees instead of bending from the waist, kneel on one knee instead of kneeling on both, and push objects instead of pulling.
